The celebration of this year’s Talakudong Festival in Tacurong City leveled up as the Department of Tourism-12 brought to Tacurong City one of the pre-events of the first-ever Budayaw Festival – the Kudong: Headdresses of BIMP-EAGA.
The event which will run until September 18 officially kicked-off this morning, September 11 with the opening of the Kudong Interactive Exhibit at the Old City Hall of Tacurong.
The Kudong Interactive Exhibit which was curated by Leonardo Rey Cariño showcases various hats and headgears of different cultural groups from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. Aside from hats on display, visitors can also witness how they are made and interact with the artisans. Visitors can also try using some of the headgears for experience and photo opportunity.
In her speech during the launching of Kudong: Headdresses of BIMP-EAGA, Mayor Lina Montilla thanked DOT-12 headed by Regional Director Nelly Nita N. Dillera for once again coming up with an event that could once again promote and showcase Tacurong City not only locally but to the rest of the world.
Aside from the exhibit, also part of the event is the Kudong Forum (September 14) wherein there will be experts in cultural headgears to conduct lectures about headgears discussing the history, materials, and the significance, among others.
A whole-day training on making Kudong as souvenir item will be also held on September 13. There will be trainers which will teach participants to produce traditional headpieces which can be sold as souvenir items. Among them are the sloong of the Tbolis, sagayan of the Maguindanaoans, and Manobo headpieces.
Performers from different parts of Mindanao where the headgears are produced will be also competing in the Indak Kudong Stage Competition on September 18, 3 PM at the Tacurong City Gymnasium and Cultural Center. Performances of each group will focus on the headgears, its stories and cultural significance. There will be eight (8) competing groups in the Indak Kudong Stage Competition.
“Tacurong is the only city in the country that celebrates annually its hats through a festival and the city derived its name from Talakudong, a headgear..” answered DOT-12 Regional Director Nelly Nita Dillera when asked why Tacurong City was chosen to host the first-ever BIMP-EAGA Head Gears Festival.
